I don’t usually do that, but I won the Trans Stoney Marathon today.
But in order here is how the long weekend of racing unfolded:
Saturday, drove up to Fern &Harvey’s MTB Farm (fantastic trails!) and froze our butt tenting with our friends. Funny part that CMC/Bowcycle is great enough to pay for our hotels…we still stayed and complained about the cold and windy weather.
On Sunday the Alberta Cup#3 race, the Bacon Buffet took place. In the sport field Bogi started the race dead last then slowly made her ways up to 1st place in the super fun twisty single track. She ended up winning the sport race with Leanne (CMC/Bowcycle) and Ramona (SpinsSisters) rounding the podium.
The elite race started for me similarly to Bogi’s as I found myself dead last after 500 meters into the race. Started passing, but the singletrack made it a bit more difficult. First I was not sure if I can turn the big 34×16 gear for 5 hard laps, but managed to do it at the end, passing most of the field and finishing 4th. My form seems to be coming slowly.
Monday, was the day of the 6 hour Trans Stony Marathon, the first Alberta cup marathon race of the year. Put my 34×19 on to make sure I survive the long ride. Both Bogi and I decided to do solo. After the start I found myself trying to catch the leader Jon Nutbrown’s wheel. Jon is a fantastic technical rider, following him was challenging and rewarding the same time. We were riding together for 3-4 laps at a pretty high pace. Than an interesting thing happened. Our ABA commissioner decided to stop me and he started painting another “7” letter onto my #7 plate with a magic marker…. As he explained there was a team that had the same number plate. So instead of just waiting for the team members to exchange each other he decided to stop the guy from the leader duo…. Jon was gone from my sight and I was more pissed than ever. With the good amount of adrenalin rush I killed the singletrack and hammered all climbs until I caught Jon again. When I did,I told my ridiculous story with the commissioner. Using the anger I continued to hammer for the next two laps and finally dropped Jon. From then on I was leading the race till the end.
CMC/Bowcycle had a little “own the podium”weekend,Brian Bain taking the Elite overall on Sunday and me taking the overall on Monday with Ryan Corey in 3rd. Other racers from the team also made it to the podium, but I don’t have the full results yet.
The United Cycle/Alberta MTB Racing guys did an awesome job organizing the races as they always do. I let the reader judge the performance of our ABA commissioner….
Next weekend is Giver8R. Keep riding.

Nice work!
I knew those tree trunk legs had some strength but boy did you show it.
Looking forward to watching you dominate the season and make the rest of the plaid crew proud.
Gabor &Bogi (and the rest of the crew did a fantastic job on the single track). Gabor…man I gotta say,you are something else. I ain’t never seen someone clean up the way you did…I CANNOT BELIEVE your skills dude. My bud &I (from the Velocity Cycling Club) are convinced that it’s all about the rider and not the bike. You proved that…kinda makes me sick…nobody should be that good!
